You make some really valid points here. I’m still in the camp that believes everyone is a designer, merely because everything we touch is designed. And we all design the way we live our lives. And every person in a company, no matter their position, contributes to the design of the product and the way users experience it in some way.
But there’s definitely a big difference between that and being a Designer. Especially a Great Designer. I think you nailed it. When Designer is in one’s job title, there’s a much bigger responsibility in regard to design. Keeping stakeholders and users happy, making sure you’re guiding users through a journey, that you’re simultaneously making something beautiful, easy to use, and solving a real problem. There’s so much that goes into being a Great Designer.
